Several communities throughout the region are municipal power providers. A municipal power provider is one that purchases electricity in bulk from the producer, maintains the distribution network to customers, and resells the electric to the end user. By maintaining the local distribution system, and bulk purchasing the power, the cost to the end user is significantly less than what can normally be purchased.
The cost savings to the end user can be in the $.10 per kilowatt-hour range. Rates and savings vary from participating community to participating community. More information about municipal electric can be found by visiting the web site of the Municipal Electric Utilities Association.
