New York State Discover Southwest NY SWNY

Safety

In this day and age, safety is a primary concern. In many areas, crime rates are high and growing, not so here. The crime rates are low, and have remained steady or even decreased over the past several years. And when a crime is committed, this area prides itself on having an excellent conviction rate.

Safety is more than crime and conviction rates though. It is also about preparation, natural incidents, and protection. In each of these areas, Southwest NY exemplifies safety. All major municipalities, industries, and community facilities have implemented or updated disaster preparedness plans within the past few years. Natural Incidents are generally minor events, circumvented by a combination of preparation, protection, and neighborly assistance. The climate and geographic location of New York State and the Northeast US put us out of harms way for most natural disaster types. That fact, coupled with our experience in dealing with events, as well as investments to lessen their effects, equates to a safe region overall. The single most common natural disaster event in the area is substantial snowfall. While this may close schools and keep families indoors for a day or two, it is rare to see any significant property damage as a result of a snowstorm.

Criminal activity is always a concern when contemplating a move to a new area. In all cases, the crime rates for the local counties are lower than the State rates, and the Upstate rates. In the case of violent crime, the rates are about half the State rate. Compound that with the conviction rates, and it all adds up to some genuinely safe neighborhoods.

Let’s put it into a little better perspective for you. In the past five years, there hasn’t been a year in which the total number of murders hit double digits for all counties in the region combined. That’s an area of nearly 275,000 population, covering several thousand square miles. That’s a crime rate we can all live with.

In all aspects of safety in the neighborhoods, Southwest NY is a model for other regions to follow. It is truly old-fashioned country living, where you can walk around the block at night, visit your neighbors, and enjoy life.
