Ethnic Diversity

Living in Southwest NY can be a uniquely rewarding experience. These rewards are drawn from the ethnic diversity that can be found throughout the area. Living among people of differing heritages, religions, races, or backgrounds can offer us insight into our own self.

While Southwest NY is a predominantly rural area, it is diverse in culture, offering opportunities that usually are only found in metropolitan areas. Couple this with rural charm and cultures that can only be found in limited rural areas, and you have a notable ethnic diversity.

America is a melting pot, and Southwest NY is no exception to this rule. Residents are primarily descendents of European ancestry. Asian, Middle Eastern, and African constituencies are also represented. Native Americans are also prevalent as three federal reservations in the region are home to the Seneca Nation of Indians.

Each of these geographic ancestral homes also bring rise to several ethnic and religious groups. Some are common, while others are more unique to the area. Refer to the sections on Religious Concentrations, Native American Culture, and Amish Culture for more specific information.

Blending together ancestry, religion, and culture result in true ethnic diversity. This blending is driven by those who live in this region and their desire to create an excellent place to live and raise a family.
