Religious Concentrations

The Southwest NY area is largely a Christian based faith community. While non-Christian churches do exist, they are in the clear minority. That being said, there are nearly 50 individual denominations with established churches and active congregations in the region.

Looking at denominational groupings and their prevalence in the region displays the diversity of its religious affiliation. About 48% of people claim Catholicism as their religion. Catholicism includes only the Roman Catholic Church.

The next most common grouping is that of Mainline Protestant faiths, where about 30% of people place their belief. Mainline Protestant includes such churches as United Methodist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, American Baptist Churches, Episcopal, and some five other churches.

Evangelical Protestant churches are claimed by about 20% of people in the region. This listing includes Wesleyan, Old Order Amish, Free Methodist, and twenty-five others.

Churches listed as other faiths are the next most popular with just under 2% of people claiming their affiliation with a listed church. These churches include Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Jewish, Unitarian-Universalist, Muslim, and Baha’i.

And finally Orthodox churches represent about .36% of the area population. There are two Orthodox churches represented, the Greek Orthodox and the Albanian Orthodox.

Information for this section was compiled using the American Religion Data Archive. More information on specific religions and churches can be found by visiting the ARDA website.
