Often times our religious and moral beliefs persuade us to pursue a private education for our children that instills those beliefs where a public education cannot. Said private education will teach our children more than reading, writing, and arithmetic. It will also teach them about our religion, why we have certain customs, and give them a sense of community among their peers who have the same belief system.
It is for those reasons that many private institutions were formed in the Southwest NY region. These private schools adhere to the teachings of a specific denomination, while still working with the NYS Education Department on curriculum standards to ensure that they also learn the three R's.
Among the private schools, there are several denominations that can be found including Baptist, Roman Catholic, Mennonite, Methodist, Seventh Day Adventist, and other Christian denominations.
Catholic schools, operated by the Diocese of Buffalo are the most common with six elementary and high schools throughout the region.
In all there are more than twenty private schools in the region. Most of these are religious affiliations. There are a select few that are special needs schools, catering to children with disabilities or other special needs.
All of these private schools are held to the highest standard by the State Education Department, as well as the local community that demands a quality education. Tuition to these schools varies. Transportation to them can be provided by the public school district in which the child lives as directed by NYS law. Students of private institutions are also eligible for extra-curricular activities offered by the public school district such as sports.
