Since Southwest NY was primarily settled and built from the mid-1800's until the early 1900's, there are many traditional styles of architecture that can be found. The melting pot of America certainly had its influence on this and resulted in homes being built with English, Greek, Italian, and other influences. Stone, brick, and wood frame construction were all employed techniques. Some areas contain pockets of a specific style, but most offer a blend of homes. Majestic Victorian houses line many streets in the villages while classic farmhouses dot the countryside.
The commercial areas in the cities and villages also offer some tremendous specimens. Those that did not succumb to urban renewal give us a glimpse into the past. The college campuses also provide some amazing examples. Some of the buildings have been designed by more famous architects, including I.M. Pei.
There are also some unique examples of architecture that can be seen. Lighthouses at Dunkirk and Barcelona attract many visitors. The Bell Tower at Chautauqua Institution, as well as the Athenaeum Hotel are magnificent specimens. Modern ski chalets to the extreme are common around the resorts, particularly in Ellicottville.
