New York State Discover Southwest NY

wineries, farms, & markets

The down-home ambiance of Southwest NY is exemplified by the variety of wineries, farms, and markets dotted throughout the countryside. These gems can provide a relaxing day of touring the country as you go from one to the next. The wineries are concentrated along the Lake Erie shoreline, since this is grape growing central. The farms and markets are widely dispersed in both geographic location and type, representing all corners of the area and all types of specialties.

Wineries
Chautauqua County is the largest grape producing county in the country outside of California. Over 20,000 acres of grapes are grown for juice and wine making. The diversity of varieties grown here including several Labruscas, French-American wines, and European style Chardonnays and Rieslings is unequaled anywhere in the world.

There are several bonded wineries in the area, primarily located along the Lake Erie shore area. Each of these farm-wineries offer tasting and tours at their facilities. Many of them also have special events and festivals, and can accommodate large tours. The award winning wines produced by these wineries are made from on-farm grapes, often pressed and processed completely on site. These farms have been family owned and operated for generations. A wonderful opportunity to enjoy history, heritage, and a little wine all at the same time. Farms
Agriculture is the predominant industry in the region. The two primary forms of agriculture that are popular are dairy farming and fruit farming. Almost any type of farming that the climate supports can be found here. Animal farms from beef cattle to buffalo to alpacas to ostrich can be found. Not commonly domesticated animals like deer and elk are also raised.

Fruit that is commonly farmed throughout Southwest NY includes grapes, cherries, apples, berries, peaches, and rhubarb. Vegetable farming is also popular with most all types of vegetables being grown.

Maple syrup is also a local favorite. One of the largest maple sugar producing regions in the country, Southwest NY is home to many maple houses.

Tours and retail sales are available at several farms across the region. This is especially true of the specialty farms. Some of the farms are open only during season, while others are available year round. Often times farm tours that cover several farms are coordinated by the County tourism offices, Cooperative Extensions, or Conservation Districts.

Markets
Open air markets provide an outlet for local growers to sell their goods, and for consumers to buy fresh-off-the-farm produce. Seasonal farmers markets are popular throughout the area. Most of the time these markets are held one or two days per week in the village square or other suitable location.

Beyond the assemblage of producers at a farmer’s market, there are innumerable roadside stands that offer fresh picked produce and homemade goods for sale. These are especially popular in more rural areas and in Amish communities.

For the freshest vegetables and best homemade foods you’ll ever sink your teeth into, try a local market or roadside stand. Many of the growers feature organically produced vegetables that will conjure up memories of grandma’s house.
