There are several areas in Southwest NY that are destinations for different cultural experiences. These areas play host to a concentration of cultural activities, often times specific to a certain cultural experience.
The most popular destination within the region is Chautauqua Institution. Chautauqua is a cultural experience that promotes religion, performing arts, and learning in a community setting. Chautauqua is a gated community, open for public visitation. Noted dignitaries from around the world have traveled to Chautauqua to experience what it has to offer. In fact nine US Presidents (William Taft, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, William McKinley, Rutherford B. Hayes, Ulysses S. Grant, James A. Garfield, Gerald R. Ford, Bill Clinton) have visited Chautauqua.
Downtown Jamestown is another cultural destination of note. Jamestown features a variety of performing arts theaters, museums, and historical sites that provide a unique experience.
The City of Salamanca is another interesting cultural destination in Southwest NY. Salamanca is the only city in the world to be located on a Native American Indian Reservation. The Seneca Nation of Indians Allegheny Reservation partially includes the Seneca Nation. Salamanca is home to the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum, as well as various shops operated by local Seneca artisans and craftsmen.
Another great destination would be a trip into Amish country. There are a few Amish communities scattered throughout the region. The largest community is in the Cherry Creek - Leon - Randolph area. Another one exists in northeastern Allegany County. A third can be found in central Chautauqua County near Stockton, as well as one in the southern reaches of the county.
