In a rural area it is rare to find much in the way of performing arts. This is not the case in Southwest NY. The area boasts a wealth of performances on a regular basis. There are two primary factors that drive this fact. First is the presence of Chautauqua Institution, which supports and offers an ambitious variety of performing arts each season. The second factor is the colleges and universities in the region. SUNY Fredonia has strong music and performing arts departments that result in a wealth of talent.
Performances can be found throughout the region, generally in the cities and larger villages. Two hotbeds for performing arts, outside of Chautauqua Institution are Jamestown and Fredonia. Jamestown boasts the Reg Lenna Civic Center as well as the Lucy-Desi Little Theatre. Both offer a host of performances from all disciplines.
Fredonia is home to the Fredonia 1892 Opera House. They play host to opera and symphony performances on a regular basis. Also in Fredonia is King Concert Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus. The hall is utilized for a variety of performances of student productions as well as traveling professional companies that are invited in for performances.
