New York State Discover Southwest NY SWNY

Hunting

Does the sound of a thundering gobble get you excited? How about seeing an elusive buck during the rut?

Whether you prefer big game or small game, upland birds or predators, SouthwestNY has some of the best all around hunting anywhere. Several factors combine to make hunting here a can't miss for any outdoorsman.

It all starts with the land itself. A tremendously diverse geography, SouthwestNY offers open farmland, dense forests, wetlands, riverbottoms, and everything in between. This diversity offers habitat for all types of game animals. And don't forget the fact that SouthwestNY boasts thousands of acres of public land to offer access to everyone.

Another factor is simply the number of animals in the forests. SouthwestNY perennially has the largest annual deer take of any region in New York State. Outside of Whitetails, there's also an abundance of Eastern Turkey, Coyote, Geese, and Ducks. If small game is more your interest there's rabbits, squirrels, woodchucks, and plenty of others to hone your skills on. For those looking for a unique challenge, black bear can be hunted in many areas of SouthwestNY.

If you're a die hard hunter, looking for that hidden area nobody else seems to know about, you have found it in SouthwestNY. Hunting is avaialable in all seasons, and the amount of public land alone let's you have your space.

And did we mention that both the NYS typical and non-typical Whitetail record deer were both taken in Allegany County? Or that Cattaraugus County has the highest turkey harvest in the state, and is top three in deer, while Allegany County has the highest buck ratio in the state.
