With six colleges and universities offering intercollegiate athletics, there’s plenty going on, no matter the season. All major sports are represented, as well as many minor sports.
St. Bonaventure Bonnies
The Bonnies field the only NCAA Division I teams in the area. St. Bonaventure Basketball has a storied tradition at this small-town college. The Bonnies have been in the National Invitational Tournament and the NCAA Tournament, making it as far as the Final Four. The Bonnies are part of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Beyond basketball, St. Bonaventure offers several other men’s and women’s sports. These include baseball, softball, cross country, swimming, golf, soccer, lacrosse, and tennis. Fredonia State Blue Devils
This NCAA Division III school offers a variety of men’s and women’s sports. The new multi-million dollar natatorium opened in 2002 now allows for the addition of aquatic sports. Eighteen intercollegiate sports are offered at Fredonia including baseball, basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, hockey, tennis, track & field, cheerleading, and volleyball.
The Blue Devils compete in the State University of New York Athletic Conference and several of the teams have boasted SUNYAC championships throughout the years. The men’s hockey team has even twice made it to the NCAA Division III Frozen Four, finishing second and third.

Houghton Highlanders
Houghton College competes in the Northeast Atlantic Conference with Division III athletics. Houghton offers various men’s and women’s sports including basketball, cross country, volleyball, field hockey, soccer, and track & field.
Highlander teams have won numerous conference titles and competed successfully in NAIA national championships. Since 1997 alone, Highlander teams have earned 17 conference titles and competed in 15 NAIA national championships. In that same span they have had 40 athletes earn NAIA All-America honors, and 49 NAIA All-America scholar athlete awards.

Alfred University Saxons
Competing in NCAA Division III athletics, the Saxons field many intercollegiate athletic teams. Saxon teams compete in the following sports: Alpine Skiing, football, basketball, softball, cross country, track & field, equestrian, golf, lacrosse, swimming, soccer, tennis, and volleyball.
The Saxons are home to the only artificial turf stadium in the area. It is used for most outdoor sports including football and soccer. Alfred teams largely compete as independents, with the notable exception of men’s lacrosse. The Saxon men’s lacrosse team competes in the Super Six Lacrosse League which has produced three NCAA Division III National Champions in the past five years and usually has all of its members ranked in the top 20 nationally.

Alfred State College
Competing in the National Junior College Athletic Association, Alfred State fields eighteen men’s and women’s athletic teams. Sports that they compete in include cross country, lacrosse, football, basketball, swimming, baseball, track & field, wrestling, volleyball, softball, and soccer.
Alfred State boasts of the academic performance of its athletic teams, noting that it had fifteen All-Americans in 2002-2003 and nine Academic All-Americans. Jamestown Community College Jayhawks and Jaguars
Jamestown Community College has two campuses in the area that offer intercollegiate sports. Both are members of the National Junior College Athletic Association. The Jamestown campus features the Jayhawks and offers both men’s and women’s sports. Teams are fielded in golf, soccer, volleyball, baseball, wrestling, basketball, softball, and swimming.
The Olean campus of Jamestown Community College features the Jaguars and offers men’s and women’s basketball.
Jamestown Community College also has a cheer team that competes at local, regional, and national cheering competitions.
